Species ID – Comparative Analysis

After you have obtained your Species ID data, we can run a phylogenetic distance analysis on your samples to generate a chart showing the relationships and a table of numerical percentages of sequence similarity within each of the two comparisons. This is incredibly useful to determine how similar each of your samples are to each other.

Data Analysis for Species Identification (Plant and Fungal)

In some cases, there may be some expectations beyond what our service can provide for Plant and Fungal Species Identification The full scope of our services for Plant Species ID can be found here our website. We do not perform additional analysis on samples beyond providing a specimen identification report. Therefore, if you would like multiple samples to be included together on one report please read further.

Because there is no cross-comparison between samples performed on our end for the standard report, many customers have asked us to provide additional services to help analyze their data. If you would like additional comparative analysis done on the results of your samples you are in the right place.

We do not maintain purified DNA standards for the entire reference database of known barcode sequences. If you would like to check whether your species is represented in the BOLD Database, please see our FAQ Guide here. If the species you’re interested in is very rare, then there may be no known DNA barcode sequences for this species. There is excellent data for most plants, however, it’s always a good idea to check the BOLD Database before ordering species identification services.

We still have a few options for samples that are not found in the BOLD Database (they do not contain any known barcode sequences). In these scenarios, we can perform barcoding on all of your samples to determine what the RbcL and MatK gene sequences are in your different species/varieties. The resulting sequences can then be used as the baseline to compare and identify other samples in the future. We are happy to help support open-science and will aid you in submitting sequences to the BOLD database for unknown and new species.
After you have obtained your Species ID data, we can run a phylogenetic distance analysis on your samples to generate a chart showing the relationships and a table of numerical percentages of sequence similarity within each of the two comparisons. This is incredibly useful to determine how similar each of your samples are to each other. For example, if you have several unknowns and want to compare them against different references. Performing a distance analysis can help cluster your samples and determine which have the most similar sequences to the samples that you choose as reference comparisons..
Please be sure to include a piece of whole leaf material with each sample as this is required to extract DNA from species that are not amenable to our standard leaf-crush DNA collection method. We ask for both types of samples because we often are working with new species and want to make sure we can obtain high quality DNA for sequencing in all cases.
Contact us if you are interested in additional analysis options or have any further questions about sample collection and the testing process.
